Three China Glaze Tranzitions shades - Review and swatches

Hello lovelies,

I got a chance to try three out of six available shades from the new Chnia Glaze Tranzitions collection. A little bit more about the collection:

China Glaze® Tranzitions’ revolutionary new nail lacquer reacts when a clear top coat is applied, changing the color from one shade to another for a stunning effect.

So let's have a look at the polishes I've got:

Lucy's Stash - China Glaze® Tranzitions

Metallic Metamorphosis
- grey shimmer before topcoat, blue-grey with topcoat. Its pigmentation is excellent, only one-coater and it dries fast. I have applied a stripe of topcoat to the middle of the nail but the difference is not very visible so no elaborate designs. I was quite disappointed with this polish.

Modify Me -
sky blue with shimmer changing into darker blue. It applies easily and it's a one-coater but it is slightly streaky. It dries fast and removal is very easy. The contrast between topcoated area is good so I've done two designs with Modify Me.

Split Perso-nail-ity -
lavender pink shimmer shade that changes into darker shade. It has a subtle silver shimmer. As the two shades above, this one is also one-coater. I like this one the most as the colour is not streaky, dries fast and the difference between colours is very good. The removal was super easy.

I don't know what to think about this collection. On one hand I like the idea of playing with topcoat to create different coloured areas but on the other hand topcoat is difficult to work with as it dried very fast and got gloopy. Also the manicure doesn't last as long because the whole nail is not topcoated.

I like that all of the polishes are opaque in one coat and that they dry fast. I think I might play around with them again.

The Tranzitions collection is available from January 2013 in the usual outlets.

  3. Thank you for the great swatches, Lucy!
Split Perso-nail-ity is gorgeous!!! I prefer this shade before the top coat, but dotting manicure is fantastic :)

I've got Barry M Chameleon collection, which work the same way (when top coat is applied the nail polish is changing color) - I think the whole idea is interesting, but I treat this only as interesting addition to the collection.

    1. Thank you Agia. I have tried the Barry M ones too but it was quite disaster as they are too metallic and stuff..

  4. These remind me a lot of the Barry M chameleon, although the colours are different. Probably not one I'll go for, I'm so used to putting a top coat on that I'd forget and go over my whole design!

    1. Yeah, it works on the same principle but I didn't like the Barry M ones very much

  6. Awesome swatches as usual! :) I really like the idea of this collection, but I'm not sure I'm loving the actual polishes.

  7. I don't really see the point apart from the novelty factor, its not any easier than using another nail varnish on top but is more limited and you can't apply a topcoat x

  8. I actually have those 3 shades, along with 2 more(got chummy with a worker at Sally's, and she let me purchase them early :) I purchased

    ~Metallic Metamorphosis (as above)
    ~Modify Me (as above)
    ~Split Perso-nail-ity (as above)
~Altered Reality (turquois/sea green, turns teal)
~Shape Shifter (french grey, turns navy blue)

    Pros:
I do like the shades, 'Modify Me' being my favorite (periwinkle just happens to be my favorite color!)
The polishes have great coverage, as Lucy mentioned. One coat did the job perfectly.
The polishes also play off each other well. I did a design using 3 of the shades, and they complimented each other nicely. And since the polishes have great coverage, it allowed me to design without any color show-through.

    Cons:
The polish (without the topcoat)tends to split and crack a bit as it dries (mostly noticed this with bluer shades, maybe it has something to do with the pigment?)
It also chips very quickly (without the topcoat). I put it on last night, and it had chipped off of 3 of my nails by this morning.
When I put the topcoat on an entire nail, the color was very streaky. When done in small sections (such as the designs by the author) it's not noticable, but to do it on the nail as a whole, it didn't look good.
Lastly(and the one that probably annoyed me the most!), the polishes stained my acrylic nails! I had just gotten my nails filled yesterday, along with a coat of clear gelish (I always do this, so I can change polishes easily with no buffing/staining) But Tranzitions some how found a way to break through the gel and stain my nails.

All in all, I wasn't thrilled with Tranzitions. It was a great concept, but the execution fell flat.

  9. I just don't get the appeal of these unless you have a very (and I mean VERY) small stash and want to add more colors in fewer bottles. The only one I'm remotely thinking about getting is Metallic Metamorphosis because it'd be nice to have a 1 coat graphite color for those days when I have to slap on some polish in a hurry. Great swatches though! :)

    1. Stacy: I use China Glaze Stone Cold from the Capitol Colors collection. I just put a glossy topcoat over it instead of leaving it matte but it may not be metallic enough for you...

    2. Well actually as one-coater it's a brilliant colour! I would wear it by itself with topcoat :)

    3. Ahhh, yes, a matte graphite would be perfect as it dries SO fast, thanks for the tip! :)

  10. I know what you mean..the trens usually die out within a year and then what? Just remember crackle polishes, that says it all :-/

  11. I wasn't sold on these at first, but I think I'll get at least one to play with. They are kind of neat!
